Google, the search engine from the company of the same name, is the world’s most used search engine. Only in Russia and Asian countries are there other market leaders.

Google was founded in 1996 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page under the name BackRub. The search engine revolutionised the way websites are indexed and ranked, making it possible for the first time to search a large part of the internet for keywords relatively efficiently. It did this by modifying a well-known algorithm from linear algebra to evaluate web pages based on the links between them. This explains the even greater importance of backlinks in the early days of Google.

Today, Google is the most widely used search engine in the world. Only in Russia and Asian countries do other search engines dominate. The evaluation of websites has changed a lot and the content of a website is becoming more and more important. Users should be presented with relevant results, not just the most relevant ones. Search engine optimisation is therefore primarily carried out according to Google’s guidelines, as other website operators and visitors also prefer this type of evaluation.

With various tools (such as Google Webmaster Tools) and services (such as Google Ads), Google has provided Internet users, website operators and advertisers with a comprehensive range of services. Today, the company is largely financed by advertising revenues (keyword: search engine marketing).
